Title: Turning old drums to accept fiber washers
Post by: Phelpsy69er on September 01, 2017, 08:07:04 PM
Ok this ? Is for Whipper. I've just watched a video on YouTube that showed you taking .043 thou off the old style drums to accept the fiber washers. Has this measurement been good for more than 1 set?? I have no late model drums to compare with. I know this trans has been apart and toyed with years ago because it had 1 homemade steel washer where it shoulda been fiber and there was only 6 fiber washers on the planetary son the plate side only I think to compensate for the wear that they had cut into the drums. Which I want to turn off in the lathe.
As always Thank You for time and input on this👍🏻
Dave

Yes Dave ,that .043 is the distance from the top of the pin to the face that the washer will sit on.
That is the thickness of 2 thrust washers. I've done several cases this way. I'll post the video here. and you can use
it for a reference. Don't forget to make a little ring for assembly of the pins so they are the right height when you press them in.

Well, let's be kind....Some people seriously have a need to know. BUT they never seem to be able to agree on anything for either and if your machine isn't running right, what difference does it make for either. If your terrain is different how can you compare the differences. On & On & ON....Sometimes you just have to make a decision & learn on your own what works for you in terrain that you ride and some are just afraid to make or can't make decisions no matter what.  :-\ Let them rolllllll.  ;D

Ok Whipper I measured one of the fiber washers today. .032 a piece. Looks like I've gotta go.064 I guess!! Haven't looked at the drums because they're at work but I'll give them a look in the am.
Just an FYI on the new fiber washers👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Where did you get those thrust washers?
That's sounds kinda thick. When I go to work tomorrow I'll check into that.

Just checked, you're right every washer I have is .032.
But still just take .043 off or the gears will have to much side play.

Oh Thank God!! You had me all worried here. What I have here is a tranny someone else butchered up and im goin thru it so my old popsicles can come out and get done right before they're junk as well! so my pin heights all vary to some extent so I'm gonna take .043 thou off the face and try to find the correct pin height after they're faced off I guess. any idea how much clearance I will need? or maybe a measurement on that pin height guage would be greatly appreciated as well!
As always Thank You for your time and assiststance on this Whipper

Ok Whipper. Have bands and everything in trans and it looks like I may be a hair tight on the input shaft. Is it possible that I could take a little bit off the drum that contacts the center plate or maybe   Somewhere else?? I need to investigate how much end play that input shaft should have after I'm done typing this.
Thanks in advance
Dave

What does hair tight mean, no end play at all??
Usually they seem to have more than I think they should have.
Cutting the drum aT the center plate doesn't seem like the right way to fix your problem.
I would take it apart and check all the surfaces you reworked

Ok. The only surface I cut down was for the fiber washers. It had 6 in it already and I wanted the 12 in it so I took that surface off .043 and it had the fiber washers on the inside of ring drum and against the outer housing. I didn't measure the actual end play but I will tomorrow. The thrust washers will be checked for thickness as well. And I didn't have the gasket in there either so that will make it tighter so I guess I'll let ya know tomorrow what I come up with gasket installed.

Thank you

Oh. Btw. These thrust washers are not the notched kind but I do have those so maybe someone threw some kinda washer in there that shouldn't be there. Will check that 1st thing in am

I don't use the steel washers with the bent tabs either.
where are you putting 12 washers? Are you talking about the ones above and below the planetary gears.
You have to machine the ring gear drum in 2 places also.

I put the 12 washers on the planetarys yes. The ring gear drum was already machined and had the fiber washers on both sides. The .103 I believe and the large diameter one that goes between case and ring gear drum. The drums turn good with center plate in. No binding anywhere that I've noticed but my concern is that input being to snug. As I know at least 2 of my machines have quite a bit of end play on the secondary clutch.
And these drums have the round holes in them if that tells you anything? Newer stlyle maybe?
Thanks again

Ok Whipper I've got to apoligize to you for jumping the gun on this input shaft deal. Got to work today and put a gasket in and bolted the center plate tight and voila I have .023 end play!!
evidently I did not have the center plate all the way into the case yesterday when I checked the end play.
Sorry to bother you on this!!
I learned that I need to check everything possible before posting ?s about it.
Thanks again
Dave

T20 is all back together and looks as everything works right but I have 1 plunger that comes out about an 1/8 inch farther than others so I split again to double check the band placement was on the drums as should be. this common??
Thanks Dave

yea, don't worry about it.
The drum could be a few thou smaller, the band might have a little less material
on it, and the steel band itself could be a few thou longer.
Drive it like a Rental banana banana banana banana
Did you cut the plungers for double O-rings while you had it apart?
