I’ve had several t20s apart that had gear oil in them. I’ve not had any proof that the oil had any detrimental effects on the band material although many of them were delaminated from the backing. Having been rebuilding automatic transmissions for over 40 years I realize that the t20 is all about friction.
If the bands don’t grab on the drums it won’t move or steer. My main concern with gear oil is it’s lubrication capabilities. In a heavy vehicle such as a loaded buffalo truck I wonder if the bands will grip properly. Automatic transmissions that we raced were always run on type F fluid until B&M came out with trick-shift. IMO the absolute worst thing that happens to a t20 is water left in it. Water will delaminate the bands for sure.  I’ve repaired several that had been running synthetic fluid and developed band chatter. The drums were so shinny you can see a reflection in them. Resurfacing the drums to a dull finish and deglazing the bands with green scrub pad fixed everyone of them.

My 2 cents is Jim Gerber has been doing this for years without a band issue of any sort yet and he's been running 6x6s a long time.I'd say thats all the proof I myself need.
Thanks

I've heard the same thing about the type of fluid to use.  I would think the biggest issue would be how the fluid reacts with the brake band material and the adhesive that holds it onto the bands.  Another issue could be how the fluid reacts with the seals, gaskets and o-rings.  I use manufacture recommended.  Maybe more long time T-20 experts can chime in.   popcorn

Gear oil vs Type F.
this is very interseting to me as I just read on another place that type F is the lowest grade fluid and do not use it, Instead use GM transfer case oil.... Has any one else here used gear oil, Now I am concerned that the type F breaks down quicker due to the heat build up.. I am hearing DO NOT use either one depending who's post I read......things that make you go MMMMMMM

no chatter issues here, they still get hot and one of them leaks pretty bad but it just needs a new pto seal.

Good to hear. I’ll bring ya a seal in June. I have plenty of those dudes👍🏻👍🏻

i use gear ill in all my t-20's. the military used to absolutely beat the snot out of their tank trainers, they recommended that we use gear oil in the all t-20s at attex. i don't believe that attex made the change in the factory but thats all i ever use.

Jimmy I’m gonna run gear oil in this one for sure and switch my trail machine over to it as well because I beat that thing to death!!! Ever have any band chatter issues?

Gonna ruffle some feathers here with this post but here goes anyway!! I tore apart a T-20 today thta had gear oil in it for 20 plus years and this is the cleanest and least amount of wear I've personally ever seen in in the 4 I've personally had apart. go ahead and beat me up on this now rofl
and this machine had definitely had some hours on it by the looks of all the sprockets.

There are 5 belt sizes for the max4 to cover all engines from tecumse through the 27-29 hp Kawasaki with comet clutches. I will post a list of factory numbers and the belts I’ve tried and use later. Not with my notebook at this time.
