well I finely got the t20 tore down. the left side ring gear drum clutching teeth worn, shift thang worn, it seems that the inner plate was backwards. also found right side planetary drum down about 100 thousandths. back to the left side it did not have a washer between ring and inner plate. all bands are bad. can I find a good parts t20 or do I just bite the bullet on parts. I also could weld up that 1 drum and cut it back down but rather not.
-
Even a GOOD parts T20 is bringing good money IF you can find one ?
You may be netter off just rebuilding yours that way you know what you have !
-
you killing me wedge, but it is what it is. 1,000 in the old fox is a hard one but I like the thang
-
Trust me I feel you !
But if you like it you need to fix it :P
The last one I saw on E/Bag had a asking price of $500. And That's not say it was good inside ?
OH thy say its good But :o
You can Check with Richard to see what a referb T20 is selling for or just keep an eye out for a used one.
I will look on my end to see if I can hook you up.
-
thanks wedge this is the first one I have ever tore down. Seems simple for a diesel mechanic. I will finish making my front left axle then order parts. lot of side work in my future.
-
Us Diesel Tech's need to stick together ;)
Just hit me up if I can help. I know a guy who has some attex parts for sale and he has a T20 in the pile. I will see if I can get a hold of him.

wedge I just got a barn find after digging through empty boxes and outboard engines a t20 he said it was in there I was beginning to wonder. just pulled case apart. looking good so far but no shifters and a crack, but my case is ok. you have 12 and 24 tooth set, does it matter right or left? if so the 2 or different, if it makes a difference stop me somebody
-
. I would try and stick with one or the other myself. When you say 12 or 24 Tooth ? Sorry you lost me as I am drawing a Blank :-[
If it looks good and is the same as yours ( flat bar / channel ) you should be able to make one good one then rebuild the other later .
Do you know what it came out of ?
-
it was a fox but I see this one is older and don't have washers between the drums. not sure on bar are channel all that is gone
-
Can you post some pic's ?
-
yep let me get the kids on that I don't know how and my phone aint smart
-
Can you fill me in on the 12 & 24 tooth deal is ?
I am brain locked :-[
-
Can you fill me in on the smoking belt?
I m brain locked too.
What doe’s the shift collars have to do with a smoking belt?
-
When He first posted he had a problem with his Drive belt slipping. Come to find out after checking all his drive system his T20 was Dragging .
Just an FYI as I Like to help whistling
-
I thought you would ask me about my doe’s hilarious hilarious rofl rofl
-
the bad trans has about 12 teeth on the clutching side on the right or not driven side, about 24 on the driven side
the clutching teeth that is on the shift drums
-
doe's are good too
-
doe's ? :o
I did inform him you was the man to talk to on the T20 As You know it inside out !! ;)
I take it the shift collars are 12 or 24 tooth ?
I have as to Yet take one of these apart !
But could rebuild your truck 5 speed in less than a day ! >:D
So the more I Learn the better I will be when I do take my StarCraft one down for rebuild.
-
my concern is do I use 24 on both sides or 24 or does it make a difference.
-
I did not count them just looked at it and said that
-
nopics
I will look for some pics
-
If you are talking the shift collars they are 9 tooth or 18 tooth. The carrier plate, shift collar and ring gear drum all have to match (9 or 18 tooth). It doesn't matter which you decide to use but I would think both sides should be the same. I don't know how hard it would be to shift if one side was 9 and the other 18.
-
the parts list has 9 or 18 tooth shifters and drums just don't know the better of the 2
-
Now I am up to speed :P
-
mine is all mixed up they match but mixed up
-
This is the 9 tooth shift collar.
Yes all 3 need to match.
I'm sure you could run 9 tooth on one side and 18 on the other,
and you would never know the difference. I've never duun it.
I think the 9 tooth shifts beter. ;D ;D banana banana banana banana
-
sounds good is there a difference between flat bar and channel guts?
-
I was once told that the flat bar T-20's were the 9 tooth and the channel was 18 tooth, but I don't know how true that is.
-
The Flat bar (popsicle) is the early one. and the Channel is later version .
Look at the post in the T20 section here. Whipper put up info on Lateral Slop. It shows both versions there.
If it doesn't have Thrust washers it is more than likely the Popsicle trannny.

yall good to have, without this site we would all be lost. folks down here in Louisiana never seen such a thing since the 70's
-
