hello wedge and nubs, I was mudslinger on the 6x6world website but got banned after Mike got his panties in a bunch over a reply I gave to a new poster who didn't have a vehicle that was amphibious, it was an innocent reply having to do with the fact that the website was devoted to vehicles that swim, but Mike took it as rude and banned me.  Truth be told, Mike couldn't take criticism of the way he ran his website and we clashed frequently when I sent him suggestions on how to make the website better, but that is just the way some people are.  I rejoined 6x6world with a new name that I still use under a new computer sig so his banning me didn't affect my ability to post to his website, I was back on it after only a short period of time and laughed when he would reply to something I posted since he didn't know who I really was.  But that is all water under the bridge now, I learned my lesson to mind my own business when it comes to new posters and whether they are on the right website based on their vehicle. See ya.

I found Route6x6 about 15 years ago and looked through it on and off over the years.  Some time ago I noticed most moved to a different site, so I started looking around over there.  I finally found and bought a Max II a little while ago and decided to do a little more research and was kind of surprised at what I found out about what happened to the company.  As I was considering the other site, I noticed a few fireworks going off, so I waited.  Then the fireworks really started happening so I did a little more reading and research.  Needless to say some things just didn't and still don't seem to add up over there (at least in my mind, although I do have an idea/theory or two).  And now here I am back were I started.  I will probably drop in over there every so often but this will be my go-to place, and besides, it's not often that you can be a "plank owner".  Looking forward to new friendships and riding partners.

by some who loves 6x6ers, not just trying to make money off banners, and sponsorships.  then selling out.

I've only been an argo owner for about a week. There'll be more details on that when I post a "build thread" in the Argo section.

Was browsing around 6x6 world for ideas and saw the springers, but all the posts were old and the new ones seemed to indicate there was some kind of fracus that drove them off.

Then saw whippa's (is that right?) video on youtube of him stripping off 6x6 world stickers and that led me here.

I'm looking for info on springers and hopefully those that have already built them are willing to share with my build up.

I'm a DIY guy, so I'll be fabricating most of my own parts.

Oh yeah, I'm in Nova Scotia Canada.

I have one of Whipper's kits on an Attex. They're awesome! I've had mine almost 9 and a half years. It's my favorite ride.

He designed kits for the Attex, Max II and Max IV. Last I heard, he had one available kit left for a Max IV. He never designed a kit for an Argo.

On the other site (back before it unraveled)  there was a thread on an Argo springer. A guy in Canada had designed one that looked pretty decent. There was talk about him selling a kit but I don't believe anything ever came of it. That was at least 5 years ago. I know there were a handful of videos on YouTube. Maybe they're still there.

Hi everyone!

I've tried to post a "hi" message with a few pictures a few times but something seems to be wrong with my system so I decided to go simple.  I'll keep my introduction short and to the point - and without pictures - sorry!

I'm scratch building an 8x8 that is loosely based on an old Max ATV that I bought years ago on the cheap.  I scrapped 99% of the old machine but did keep the general approach to how it was designed.  Plus, I kept the old T-20 and control linkages.  Everything else is new, store bought, or custom built.  I am building the frame from scratch using aluminum and the overall dimensions are 4 ft. wide by 8 ft. long.  Not sure how tall it will be yet, but I want the final vehicle to somewhat resemble the US Army Stryker, only a lot smaller.  We will see.

Anyway, after I figure out why my pictures didn't upload, I will post a few for you guys to shoot at.  I'm not a master mechanic or even a novice build artist.  I'm just me.  I am fairly mechanically inclined and have picked up welding recently.  Cool stuff melting metals together.  I can tell you that TIG welding aluminum is tough.  At least it is for me, but after a few weeks, I am getting decent at it.  Well, at least I think so.  You guys can bust me for my ugly welds.

I'll read over the posts you guys have been uploading.  Lots of good information out there it seems.

Thanks for letting me in the door and hope to communicate with youes guys real soon.

Joe

I'm building the fame out of aluminum but I'm not sure yet about the body.  I thought about using aluminum, wood, or high strength plastic plate.  I used diamond plate aluminum for the underneath and will probably use the same for the interior floor.  The sides and top may end up being wood but I'm open to ideas.

For the engine, I have Kohler Command Pro 38 HP.  Probably overkill but we'll see.

Thanks

I’m new to the AATV world. I’ve always wanted one when I was a kid. I traded a 4 wheeler I rebuilt for what I think is 1972 Attex 252 Colt. The machine and body was a basket case. I made all new drive shafts and custom heavy duty hubs. Changed out every bairing, moved the controls to the left side, plastic welded all the cracks and holes in the body, made new brake discs and chain guides. I’m sure I have forgotten other stuff I’ve done. Drove it for over two years before I started losing compression threw a spark plug. I liked bring the Attex back from the dead. The 440 two stroke Rupp motor that’s in it now is hard to find parts for repair. It’s been sitting for a year because I was not sure on witch way I wanted t go with it. Now I’m thinking of get rid of it for a newer machine. Thanks to Wedge for reaching out. It’s nice to be on a site where people talk about what we all love to do and not other B.S.

Hello all.

Just recently bought a 1983 Argo TB 8X8.
Needs some work but I think it will serve my purposes just fine.

Already changed the four rear chains and ordered up a new bearing kit or two.
I am hoping all it need is to get caught up on some neglected maintenance.

Oh and some new LED headlights and a few personal touches.

Hello everyone.  I just picked up and Attex ST300.  I believe it is pre-1970.  JLO L297 motor.  It is in really rough shape.  Starter locked up.  Carb issues.  Broken chain.  Cosmetic issues.  Price was right though.  It has been modified.  Engine has been raised and rotated 180 degrees and there is now an Apex Gear MPLS Minn gear box under the motor.  Belt from motor to Apex, then chain to axle with the 2 brake mechanisms.  Was told it ran and drove.  I am new to this and am going to need some help.  Thanks and nice to meet you all.

Here are a few pics of this drivetrain mod I am starting out with.  I have also confirmed that the Apex gear box underneath the engine also has reverse.

No kidding. I am new to this forum and just went through about every post on it. I already posted my pics up on your thread.  I am still trying to find out what component that is that I have between the two brake rotors. I am new to these 6x6's and obviously half of that gear box or whatever it is is missing.  Trying to figure out what people did decades ago just based on what I have now is interesting. My biggest problem right now is with the carburetor on the JLO motor.  If I can't get this tillotson carburetor figured out in a week or so I'm just putting a new four stroke motor on it and being done with it.

What are you using it for, racing or trail machine?  Racing - you may want to keep the 2-stroke but you can race a 4-stroke as well.  Trail machine - you will want a 4-stroke.  As for the transmission you can fix that one or replace it with a T-20 if you can find one.  If it was mine I would put a 4-stroke in it and a T-20 transmission.

No racing at all. Strictly trail riding. I have three wheelers and four wheelers and dirt bikes. This was kind of an Impulse buy. The price was right. Would the T20 transmission replace both the Apex gear box and whatever component that is that I have that half of it is missing? What is it that I have that half of it is missing?  I have no idea what is underneath this home built engine stand. I have no idea how easy it would be to drop the motor back down or if it was so modified that I would have to do more than it's worth to put the engine back in its original place. The Apex gearbox does give me reverse. Would the T20 give me reverse as well? I am still putting the cart before the horse on this one. I still can't even get the motor to run because of issues with the HR67A carburetor. Does anyone know if there is an after-market carburetor that would replace the Tillotson?

The T-20 has reverse and would replace the Apex and the other component.  You would need a drive clutch on the engine and a driven clutch on the T-20.

Try to get the engine going first and try to drive it, even if it is only to see if it all works.  The component may be only acting as a drive and might not be missing anything to make it move.  The pictures are a little hard to tell.  If you decide to replace the engine and tranny, the only way to really know if the motor can be lowered is to take it all apart.  You will have to do some fabrication work to change it from what it is to something more user friendly.

Better pictures. The first picture is a picture I found on the internet. You can clearly see the motor sits down low behind the gearbox as it would from the factory. The clutch pulley for the belt is on the driver's side of the machine. The carburetor faces forward and the exhaust Port is toward the rear. The axle that has the two brake drums for steering also has a belt pulley on it that goes straight to the clutch pulley on the motor. The second picture is taken from the same angle and is of my machine. Ignore the cheap plastic gas tank added to the motor. It also is a JLO motor. Because of the addition of the Apex gearbox the motor that needed to be rotated 180 degrees so that the machine still drives forward. You can clearly see the belt clutch pulley on the motor now on the passenger side. You can see that both pictures have the same gearbox however my picture is missing two thirds of the gearbox. What is the mechanical lever on top of the factory gearbox? Is that factory reverse? Could it be possible that the factory gearbox went bad on the machine and to still maintain reverse the Apex gear box was added under the motor?  Also, if my motor was rotated 180 degrees so that the rotation of the motor still has the machine moving forward with the addiction of the Apex gearbox, how is it that the carburetor still faces forward? Could the block only be rotated and the head be bolted on 180 degrees from the way it came? Does this look and sound familiar to anyone? Thanks for all the replies.

The Lever IS Reverse . And Yes your rite Your missing 1/2 of your tranny. Now you have a Lawn mower tranny in you 6x6 ! whistling
But look at the tranny for sale on e,bay that I sent ya the post # and you will see what your looking for.
Also there are Members on here that have Attex part that may chime in later that may have what you need ?

You may be right about the tranny going bad and having the Apex added.  They rigged it so it still had foward and reverse and they used the old tranny as a type of limited slip differential to steer it.

That had to be so much easier than just replacing or fixing the original problem (he said sarcastically).

So I'm okay with the motor being elevated. It actually make things easier if I need to work on the motor. It makes sense that half the case of the original gearbox was maintained so that I still have the limited slip that the machine requires for steering. The main problem now is still with this Tillotson HR67A carburetor. Cheapest I have found will cost over $200. At that point for another hundred and change I can have a brand new 400 cc 4 cycle Predator engine with electric start. Does anyone have the specs for the JLO motor with regards to RPM, shaft size, and length as well as rotation? Obviously the rotation I can figure out. I'm sure I could get a new clutch pulley for the belt to fit whatever shaft would come on the predator.  For the ease of it I would just hope that the mounting bolts for the Predator would be the same distance to the center of the pulley as what I have now as to not have to fabricate another engine mount on top of what's already been done to have the belt line up with the Apex gearbox.

Title: Re: New member

Wedge---Factory would be great but $ is a big factor. This is a toy and only a toy.  I am not looking to restore or sink a lot of money into it.  I was told it ran and drove, set up this way, prior to the chain breaking years ago (already fixed the chain). Best I can guess...with the help of everyone today...the factory gearbox took a crap. Maybe they already had the Apex. Maybe they could not easily get the factory gearbox repair/replaced. Either way, the motor was elevated, apex was mounted under the motor. The apex is connected to the motor by belt. the belt pulley was removed from the axle with the brake rotors and a sprocket was added.  The axle is connected to the apex with chain.  The apex is posi so the working (limited slip) half of the factory gearbox is still in place so that the steering still works. I am more than ok with this setup.  Elevated motor is easier to work on for someone new to these machines.

Ascaw---I removed the carb. Complete tear own. Cleaned and checked all passages and ports. Cleaned screen and both diaphragms. Reinstalled. Set high and low needles between 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 to start off with.  Never could get motor to run on tank fuel.  It did run great in starting fluid. Only did that for a few seconds as starting fluid does not have oil. Removed carb and checked. Screen was wet with tank fuel. Lower and upper sides of lower diaphragm were wet with tank fuel.  Only the lower part of the upper diaphragm was wet.  I am not getting fuel from the middle section to the main part of the carb. Also lost the float spring on the garage floor....never to be found again. Carb is a Tillotson HR67A on a JLO L296 motor.  Is there an after market carb that will bolt to the spacer on the motor? I priced a rebuild kit at $100+hopefully spring included. I priced a car at $200+. If I am going to spend that much on just a carb...for $100 more I can get a 4 cycle 400cc predator engine brand new and not deal with a 50 year old motor at all.

Though my carburetor is listed half of those diaphragms are not correct. Since it doesn't look like a stock picture and something somebody actually laid out and took a picture of, I'm a little cautious about that. I had seen that one already. The diaphragms just are not what I have. While it does look like it has the correct spring, I think the problem is with my diaphragms being old and stiff and no longer fluttering to pump the fuel.

Keep in mind that if you did go with the Predator you may and probably will have to get a new clutch to fit the Predator shaft.  The 2 and 4 stroke rpm difference may also require new clutches to run properly.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Joel Burdick and i'm here in Wisconsin. I recently bought what looks to be a 93-94 Max iv and it's fun as hell. I know nothing about these machines and trying to learn more. I recently just bought a new heated throttle cable and totally confused, but I've been super happy with this machine. I even have it plowing snow, which is so much fun. I'm looking forward to learning more about these machines.

I never formally introduced myself to the site.  I just hit the ground running with problems.  I recently bought a Max II approx. year of 1997 or 1998.  Serial Number is 13809.  I have been wanting one for going on 15-20 years and finally pulled the trigger.  Ill be posting on here to get yalls knowledge as I get more time to drive around here in South Texas.  I got it for my ranch and duck hunting on some stock ponds that are well hidden.  I also have two lake houses that I got to take it for a quick swim this last weekend.  Thanks in advance for all yalls input and help.  Seems like a solid group of 6x6ers.

I figured Id run down to tractor supply and grab some, but I didn't know if there was one in particular anyone has found to be best.  8)

Good morning all! New member so I figured I’d introduce myself. I recently purchased my second AATV to use primarily for ice fishing. I now have a 1995ish Max II with the 14hp B&S. Today it gets the 16HP carb and some other maintenance items.
I originally purchased a 1972 Attex with the JLO 300 to see if it would tow my ice sled and get me back and forth across the lake. It did as advertised so I upgraded to a newer 4 stroke model (I realize “upgrade”, “newer”, and “4 stroke” may be controversial words)...but the 45 year old Attex just wasn’t as reliable as I needed it to be and I got sick of wrenching on it for an hour before I could hit the lake.
Anyhow, I’m retired military, now I’m a manager for an oil company, and enjoy the great outdoors here in New England.
Thanks for allowing me into this site!
Jeremy
