Andy, I have never used an etching primer so I don't know how well they work.  I have always either removed all the old or sanded and feathered the paint.  i used a good primer that is compatable with the paint I was using (I.E. a good epoxy polyamide primer with a polyurethane paint).  If you are going to use a rattle can find a good type you like that is durable.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I'll just go ahead and keep the rims the original silver color and just clean them up and get the loose paint off and paint over them. Do you guys recommend that I use an etching primer or some kind? Since my new tires are arriving today, I figured I'll paint the rims with the old tires on it, then when the paint is completely cured i'll change the tires.

If you go as far as completely stripping the rims then have them powder coated.  That would  be the best and most durable.  If you decide to clean them up and paint them, make sure you get them CLEAN.  Remove any corrosion, dirt, grease etc.  Scuff all painted areas, prime entire surface and paint with a color that matches the original.  WFO is correct about looking worse if you don't completely redo them.  Also if you just plan to clean and repaint,  make sure you give the paint plenty of time to cure before installing new tires.

if you clean them up and paint them black then down the line when the black comes off it will look worse. either do it right and strip and paint. or just clean them up and paint with same color

Painting stock rims on Max IV

I purchased some new tires for my Max IV, and I thought I would paint the rims before putting new tires on them. They are the factory original 12" rims painted silver. The paint has chipped off in areas around the rim. I was thinking of painting my rims black, but I'm concerned about how the black rims would hold up when I go out riding.

What kind of paint do you recommend for the rims? Should I use a separate primer, or use a primer/paint mix? Should I just scrape off all loose paint and paint over that, or do the rims need to be sandblasted? (I know sandblasting is best, but the paint that is still on the rim is bonded really good, and I don't want to invest a lot into this project).
