I have an 1963 Pengor Penguin that was originally powered by a 10hp 2 stroke motorcycle engine.
The motor could be started in the opposite direction to give you reverse gears.
I am pondering the idea of replacing it with something more modern if I cannot repair the original.
I have seen some small 4 stroke motors (chinese) on ebay that also have reverse. They claim 7.5kw of power which converts to 10hp.
Would they be the equivalent of 10hp 2 stroke?
Thanks

Can you post some pics of the engine and how it is in the unit ?

Did the pics help, Wedge?

Yes I was looking at them. It looks like an old Banellie engine ?
But must say I never saw one like that before ?
You try to Google it ?

The engine is a Villers 9E. British made.
The motor is actually the easy part.
I am more concerned with the Dynastart.
The Dynastart unit is the starter motor and the generator/alternator. Once a certain RPM is reached it starts charging the battery and providing the electrical current for the vehicle.
To obtain reverse you turn the key the other direction and the motor starts up in the opposite direction.
NOBODY near me has a clue as to repairing one.
That is why I am considering alternative power plants. Still need reverse but maybe something with a more modern (self contained) electrical system and easier to repair.

Golf carts that are much newer use a similar reversing starter generator. Try contacting nubs on this site.

A follow up for anyone interested - this engine is now running. The Dynastart, a starter/generator assy that consists of a stator and rotor that are integrated into the right side of the engine (not an exterior, bolt on unit) has been cleaned, the coils of the stator re-wrapped with cloth, new brushes etc. have been installed. The rest of the engine has seen some new and good used parts installed. The teardown and reassembly was documented and uploaded onto youtube in a 15 part series that includes a short test drive to test the transmission and clutch. The videos are titled "Penguin Engine and Transmission Teardown" and the test drive can be seen at about the 51 minute mark of part 15. The attached photo was taken of the engine installed in a Penguin I use for test running engines.
