A lot of the early magnums were threaded crank. Never saw a conquest with threaded crank.

Well, that was fun....not.

Tried removing the primary. Center bolt wouldnt budge.

After taking most of the engine bay apart to get to the clutch, i discovered the bolt still wouldn't budge.

Great. Im thinking theres r d locktight in there or its all seized up and i'm buggered.

Then I noticed at some point in this frustration that i could turn the engine flywheel and the clutch would atwy stationary.

Wtf?

Yeah, come to find out Kohler primarys are screwed on to the crank, not keyed.

Argh!

At least now its off and it came apart easy peasy once on the bench.

All the other bits i have off as a result of chasing my tail on the primary also lets me fix a few other annoyances in the engine bay so that's at least a positive side to all this...

since you are rebuilding this whole thing i would strongly advise on a new drive and driven clutch, nothing like getting stranded somewhere in the boondocks with failed clutch or belt.

I wholeheartedly agree with your logic.

Economics, however, dictates a recondition vice replace.

Belt looks to be in great shape, likely a recent replacement.

Argo clutch question....

So my 86 Conquest is running the clutch all the time at idle, resulting in crunching gears while shifting. It's been this way since I bought it a week or so ago.

I've adjusted the idle down to where it is almost stalling and the driver will disengage. It still rotates the driven, but a light touch on the belt stops it. But it's not in a drive-able condition with the idle that low. Not good for lubrication either.

With the engine off, the driver clutch is full open. I can see it through the front vents. Not even close to touching the belt. So I know it's retracting fully.

What I'm thinking is the spring has just gone a bit soft after 30-odd years.

So what do you think my options are?

Replace the spring with new (seems to be hard to find) or shim it?

I'm partial to replace, but it's seeming hard to find for my year. The part number looks to be K-5218304 from the parts list PDF (ser number KB7476). Discontinued/superseded of course.

Any ideas or leads?

Alternative spring?
