The belt could be too tight as you suggested.  The engine may be idling too high/fast.  Make sure the throttle cable is adjusted properly.  You can loosen the throttle locking screw on the carb/govenor and make sure the butterfly is closing all the way.  You could also have a clutch not opening or closing all the way (depending on the clutch) but it is more likely the belt adjustment or the idle speed.  Make sure the throttle cable moves freely, is not sticky or sticking and has full range of motion.

This may be an easy fix to the throttle, but when I turn the six wheeler on (in forward gear) it will automatically start rolling and going forward. When I try to switch from neutral to any gear the gears grind. I believe it could be that the belt is too tight. I just got it and haven’t been able to tear into it or even look at it yet as it’s at my lakehouse. I only have weekends to play so I haven’t gotten a chance. Any ideas?  popcorn
